Study pressure and buoyancy with this Cartesian diver toy in an ordinary plastic bottle filled with water. Impress friends and family with the octopus as it dives and rises with a squeeze of the bottle. Easily slide the narrow octopus through the narrow opening of most plastic bottles. Learn and demonstrate how changes in pressure affect buoyancy in floating submerged objects. Place the diving octopus inside a water-filled bottle to learn how changes in pressure cause the octopus to dive up and down.
Concept Used
Buoyancy is the tendency of an object to float in a fluid. An object floats if it’s lighter (or less dense) than the fluid, and will sink if it is denser. The density of the Diving Octopus is made up of the plastic pipette bulb, nut, air pocket and water inside the bulb. When the bottle is squeezed, compressing the air inside the dropper and allowing more water to enter the bottle causes it to sink. When the bottle is released, the pressure drops again. The air in the dropper expands, pushing water out. This makes the diving Octopus lighter, so it floats to the surface.
