A submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has the more limited underwater capability. Submarines are referred to as “boats” rather than “ships” irrespective of their size.

Submarines can work at greater depths than are survivable or practical for human divers. Modern deep-diving submarines derive from the bathyscaphe, which in turn evolved from the diving bell.

Built in Germany in 1989, the JAGO submarine remains one of the most iconic marine research vessels, used for deep-sea photography, surveying and logistics, and the collection of biological and geological samples, among other tasks.
