Plasma Ball Tesla’s Lamp: The globe is a glass sphere with most of the air replaced with 3 of the noble (or inert) gases – neon, argon and xenon. A high frequency alternating current electrode is in the centre, and when it discharges, it excites the filaments that strike the inside of the globe. The globe diameter is 15cm.

Putting your hand or finger on the glass creates an attraction spot, as the human body has less resistance than the glass. This allows for a brighter, thinner tendril of plasma to form. The filament will move as the gas around it heats up, and the gas becomes more buoyant, taking the filament along for the ride.

Simply plug it in and turn it on. Placing your hand or finger on the globe will allow you to “control” the strongest and brightest filaments.

Originally patented by Nikola Tesla in 1894 following his experiments with high voltage currents, the plasma ball is a colourful way of observing electrical discharges. Control the filaments using your finger to move them around the glass.
